Macke also introduced elements of Cubist geometry and expressionist color into his art. Much like his friends and contemporaries Kandinsky and Marc, Macke painted real subjects with a free and expressive language. German artist August Macke was a key member of the Blue Rider group. August Macke In der Tempelhalle, by Auguste Macke, 1914, via Christie’s The overriding theme of the almanack was an emphasis on the “spiritual in art.” This thematic focus encapsulated the spirit of the times, and it has since become one of the most important documents in early 20th century art.ģ. This published album featured essays by world leading painters, composers and critics, along with eclectic illustrations by a diverse range of artists. In 1912, Kandinsky and Marc edited The Blue Rider Almanack (Almanach Der Blaue Reiter). His art became a powerful antidote to industrialization, noting how animals live in close, symbiotic harmony with the land. But Marc’s paintings focused predominantly on animals that seem to merge into one with their surroundings, including horses, cows and foxes. Much like Kandinsky, his art was eccentric and colorful with a Cubist quality. Franz Marc The Large Blue Horses by Franz Marc, 1911, via the Walker Art Center, MinneapolisĪlong with Kandinsky, German painter Franz Marc helped found the Blue Rider group. He wrote, “The artist must train not only his eye but also his soul, so that it can weigh colors in its own scale and thus become a determinant in artistic creation.” Kandinsky’s art profoundly shaped the work of his contemporaries, as they sought to emulate the concepts and qualities of his art within their own.Ģ. In his own art Kandinsky’s language became increasingly expressive and vivid, with bold strokes of intensely bright color as he moved closer to his uniquely spiritual brand of pure abstraction. From there, he became the figurehead for new modes of self-expression. Russian-born painter Wassily Kandinsky was a founding member of the Blue Rider group. The other new feature in this update is an improved search tool that makes it easier to select multiple users for group chats and video calls from Hangouts in Gmail.1. This feature is a bit hidden in the Hangouts settings menu, so chances are people will select a mood once and then forget about it. Unlike in other IM apps, however, you can’t manually toggle your availability between available/unavailable (or invisible).Īs part of today’s update, Google is also giving its users the ability to show what mood they’re in by choosing between 80 emoji that others will then see in their status lists. This approach is markedly different from how other IM tools like Skype work, and it looks like Google decided to bring back the old status indicators because many users were simply confused by them. Instead of the bubbles, Hangouts in Gmail would show a very subtle green line underneath a user’s profile picture when they were available for chat.īecause Google considers Hangouts to be a universal chat tool that users can use across devices, it pretty much did away with traditional presence indicators because the company assumes that you are always online anyway - either on the web or on a mobile device. It’s not a major new release, but the update brings back the green “availability” bubbles that Google did away with when it replaced Google Talk in Gmail with Hangouts. Google is updating Hangouts in Gmail today.
